Register your Discovery Semester

  1. Log into sis.rpi.edu to register your Discovery Experience.
  2. Visit Handshake to upload your offer letter and resume and to answer a few questions about your experience (Handshake > Career Center > Experiences > Request an Experience)

*An offer letter is required to confirm registration.

CCPD will verify and approve the plan and send a confirmation email to your RPI email address.

Discovery Semester Requirements

  • Students must be supervised by an individual knowledgeable in the field, and that cannot be a family member. 
  • Students must satisfactorily complete a mandatory LMS course during their Discovery Semester experience.
  • Co-ops have a minimum of 520 hours required to fulfill this experience.
  • Internships have a minimum of 260 hours required to fulfill this experience.

  • Civic Engagement experiences must involve supervision by an individual who is knowledgeable in the field at the selected organization.
  • A minimum of 260 hours must be dedicated to this semester-away opportunity.
  • Students must satisfactorily complete a mandatory LMS course (ILEA 4400) during their Discovery Semester.

  • Students must take at least the equivalent of six credit hours of study, or a comparable academic experience, over the course of the semester in order to remain enrolled at RPI during their Discovery Semester.
  • There is no mandatory LMS course for this designation. Students must satisfactorily complete all required assignments during their Discovery Semester.
  • International Discovery Semester experiences must be approved by the Office of International Programs. For details, review the Study Abroad/Exchange Application Instructions.

  • Students are permitted to work either in-person or remotely during the Discovery Semester. (Note: Remote work requires Payroll approval)
  • Students can work up to a full-time schedule (i.e., up to 40hrs). The work schedule is determined based on project needs and funding constraints.
  • Students must satisfactorily complete a mandatory LMS course (ILEA 4400) during their Discovery Semester. 

  • Develop three (3) semester long career orientated goals. 
  • Students must satisfactorily complete a mandatory LMS (ILEA 4400) course during their Discovery Semester.
